Story

About Dario.

Dario Calmese is an artist, writer, and founder who explores how images, stories, and institutions shape culture — and how they can be redesigned. Through photography, creative direction, and public projects, he creates work that helps people see identity, history, and power more clearly.

In 2020, he became the first Black photographer to shoot a cover for Vanity Fair in the magazine’s 106-year history, with his landmark portrait of Viola Davis. He has also directed runway presentations for Pyer Moss, created work with The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and collaborated with Adobe Lightroom to develop imaging tools that better honor brown skin.

He is the founder of the Institute of Black Imagination, a cultural R&D platform building new cultural infrastructure through archives, media, and public space. A Harvard Loeb Fellow, Calmese works at the intersection of artistic practice, pedagogy, and civilizational design.
